Parker's science field trip

Most of the 5th graders at Parker's school went to Astro Camp over the weekend. Due to various reasons, one being that it goes over a Sunday, we don't send our children on this field trip. Instead, we try to do something enriching on our own. This time, I took Parker and his friend, Josh, out of school and we went to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. The boys spent 3 1/2 glorious hours playing with all things science!

They loved the eye trick puzzles

Parker was trying to touch the spring at the back, but when you reach down, this is the image that comes up.

Creating their own energy. It was hard, but fun work!

After about 45 minutes, a middle school group was unleashed on the museum. The students were running wild. Some even were playing a ukulele. We decided to try to get away from the raucous and went to a room with thousands of building blocks. We tried to build the coolest, highest structures possible. We didn't do too bad.

My first attempt started getting wobbly before it was very high

Parker thought this was a lot like playing Jenga

Josh built the highest structure and when he was done, the boys pulled over carts to catch the tower as they pushed it over

My second attempt got pretty tall. We seriously could have spent many more hours in this room!

Parker was fascinated with the tornado

The boys favorite thing at the museum was the cloud maker. They kept going back to it to send more clouds up to the roof.

They learned that if you let the pressure build up, the clouds would be thicker

They said this felt cool and wanted me to try......I passed

I had to practically drag the boys out of the museum because I was past the comfortable hunger stage. Once outside, they spent time checking out the huge fountain. It's so beautiful in Balboa Park!

For lunch, we drove up the freeway to Fuddruckers - one of our faves! We couldn't leave without one of their famous brownie sundaes - YUM!
