For the past 2 years, I have been working on getting my boys positions as umpires for our local Pony League. It turned into a bit of a political process, but I was able to get Parker in as one of the new umpires this year (I was bummed that Bryant couldn't be one, but at least he can still ref soccer).
The new umpires spent 2 long evenings in training classes and half a day at the baseball field in hands-on instruction before finally getting the chance to put their gear on and get behind the plate. This Saturday, all the new umpires took turns umping the scrimmage games before the official season starts next week. Parker had so much fun that he offered to do more games. He's especially excited to make money (he's saving for a drum set - we'll see if he actually wants to spend so much of his hard earned money on one).
Here's Parker hard at work!
Keeping the plate clean
Perfect form behind the catcher
Strike!
1 ball, 2 strikes
Checking his counter between innings
Getting some tips from the head umpire
Strike! The "S" on his hand was to remind him that his right hand was used to hold up the strikes when he showed the count
