Happy Mother's Day!

When I was thinking about Mother's Day, I remembered this 4 generation picture that was taken about 10 years ago. It reminds me of the importance of teaching our daughters all the things they will need to know to be able to be successful women and mothers. All the homemaking skills that I have can be traced back to my Grandma Norlund. Grandma was an amazing cook! Everytime she would visit, she would make us homemade donuts that tasted better than any I'd ever had from a store. She would also make us sweet raisin bread which my mom now makes sure to have freshly made whenever we come to visit. On Grandma's last visit to my home, she taught me to make perogi - YUMMM!!!

Grandma also taught my mom to sew and then my mom passed that talent onto me, too. I never had to worry about finding a modest formal dress because I could just go to the fabric store and pick whatever dress I wanted and my mom would make it. Now I'm not nearly as good at sewing as my mom and grandma, but I can definatelly hold my own.

Another thing my grandma was great at was gardening. She, along with Grandpa, had an amazing vegetable and flower garden. We used to be able to pick fresh flowers to make bouquets each day when we would visit. My mom is now a "master gardener" and has the most beautiful roses and hostas! I enjoy gardening but sadly, I'm not as good as I'd like to be. I think it's partly due to such a hot climate and clay-filled soil. At least I was taught enough that I can have a decent yard and garden.

There are many more skills that have been passed down for which I am truly grateful. I hope that I can do my part to continue the legacy that has been established for so many generations of women in my family. Thank you mom for teaching me how to be a wife, mother, and homemaker. I live for the quote I once heard you say "My job is to work myself out of a job".
